With a 7.7 on IMDb and excellent ratings on Netflix, the Norwegian Christmas series Hjem til Jul (in English: Home for Christmas) was a great success. Now the streaming service has announced that its creators will come up with a new series for Christmas 2022.
New Norwegian Christmas series on Netflix by creators ‘Home for Christmas’
Netflix has announced in a press release that the director Per-Olav Sørensen will be working on a new Christmas project. He will be supported in this by writers Lars Saabye Christensen and Jan Trygve Røyneland. The production of the series will start in 2022 in Oslo, Norway, and it is logically expected to premiere on Netflix just before Christmas.
The title has not been announced at the time of writing. However, we do already know that the series will consist of 6 episodes, each lasting about 35 minutes. The cast will of course consist of Norwegians, but also of actors from all the other Scandinavian countries.
Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, Director of Nordic Original Series at Netflix, says: “We are honored to continue our collaboration with Per-Olav Sørensen and to be working with him on this project. It is so exciting to see him take on a new show in the heartwarming Christmas mood that he has proved to capture so brilliantly in Home for Christmas most recently.”
Director Per-Olav Sørensen: “I am happy to collaborate with Netflix, and to collaborate with the great writer Lars Saabye Christensen yet again. This story about a handful of stranded characters at an airport really intrigues us, and we look forward to weaving these destinies together.”
Plot of the Christmas series
It’s December 2022. A group of people arrive at Oslo airport. Some to welcome their loved ones, some to fly home to their families, and some who want to fly away and escape Christmas. But in one way or another, their Christmas mission goes awry. They are all stranded at the airport and the clock is ticking – only 24 hours til Christmas – so what do they do?
Directed by Per-Olav Sørensen
You may know director Per-Olav Sørensen from some of his other successful films and series. For example, he previously made the exciting Scandinavian thriller Quicksand and directed the miniseries Nobel. He is currently working on the film Royalteen and the series The Playlist, both titles that will be released on Netflix in 2022.
His most similar project, however, is Hjem til Jul, a Christmas series that launched in 2019 and received a second season in 2020. In it, we follow Johanne into a new December month as she continues her search for eternal, warm and true love. As her family and the world around her fall apart, how can she still believe in true and eternal love? Does it even exist and will she find the one this year at Christmas? Watch the trailer below.
